Subject: [*] aete resource for HyperCard 2.1
Here is an "aete" (Apple Events Text to English) resource for
Hypercard 2.1. Add it to the HC 2.1 application using ResEdit,
or one of HyperCard's resource moving tools, then reboot and
rebuild the DeskTop. It provides basic AppleScript-awareness
for HyperCard 2.1. Work with a copy; use it at your own risk.
An easy (and inexpensive) way to get AppleScript is to purchase
the book "The Tao of AppleScript", ISBN 1-56830-075-1, published
by Hayden Books for BMUG. It lists for US$24.95.

Subject: [*] Alias Director 3.5.2
Alias Director was written to make creating, using, and the various aspects=
of
alias management as easy as possible. To provide the maximum in speed and
convenience, Alias Director makes extensive use of the drag-and-drop featur=

System 7. =20

that
appears in the Finder--file, folder, disk, or partition--that you can norma=

box
will appear that contains the item's name in a field for editing, a pop-up =
menu
for telling Alias Director where you want the alias it creates, and some
buttons. The menu contains three choices initially: Apple Menu Items, Deskt=
op,
and New Location=C9. To put an alias in a location ("location" refers to fo=
lder,
disk or partition) listed in the menu, select it from the menu and click th=

Changes in version 1.4.1
--------------------
Bug Fixes:
* Fixes a bug in time setting and displaying when the "Automatic DST" feature
was off.
* Added a fix for the bug in the control panel of the Global Village TelePort
Bronze modem, that caused the clock go back to its previous (and incorrect)
time
after a connection. (Not yet tested; let me know whether the fix is effective
or
not)
* Fixes a bug that caused the extension to beep at startup.
* Fixes a bug that sometimes prevented the startup icon to be displayed at
startup.
* Fixes a bug that caused AutoClock to retry an automatic connection after a
failed connection when a manual connection in between was successfully
completed.
* Fixes an incompatibility with the Delay feature of FaxSTF.
* Added the choice "next-to-last" in the Daylight Saving Time rules.
* Fixes a bug with both Australian time servers due to an unexepected change
in
their time format.
* Added Daylight Saving Time rules for Australia and New Zealand. (Not really
sure they are correct).
* Fixes default phone number of both Australian servers (a leading zero was
missing).
* Fixes the Daylight Saving Time OFF time for United State (2:00am instead of
3:00am)
* Added initialization strings for some popular modems in the documentation.

mcvert converts among Macintosh file formats used for file interchange,
including BinHex 4.0 (.hqx) and MacBinary (.bin). mcvert is written
in C and runs on many popular UNIX boxes. See mcvert.1/mcvert.man
(the man page) for program details. See README for how to build mcvert.
Please replace mcvert-214.shar with mcvert-215.shar, which follows.
It appears that mcvert-214.shar had long lines wrapped, which damaged
the archive's integrity; and when extracted, an invalid C file was
created. Now all lines in the archvie are 80 characters or less (tab
counts as one character).

Subject: [*] Patriot Command 1.1 Submission
Enclosed please find a binhqx'ed Compact Pro archive of Patriot Command 1.1's
release. Please replace any previous versions in your archive's game
directory with this version.
Patriot Command is an implementation of a (once) popular arcade
classic. The object of the game is to protect world cities from an
onslaught of ICBMs and other nasties that an unnamed whimsical
fascist dictator decided to launch against the world. The worlds only
defenses are three Patriot missile silos which you command. Each
Patriot missile is capable of creating an explosion large and powerful
enough to destroy any enemy objects that are engulfed by it.
Patriot Command requires a Mac II or better (020, 030, or 040 Mac)
with a 640x400 or larger 256-color/grayscale monitor and 32-bit
Color Quickdraw. It runs on System versions 6.0.7 and later as well
as A/UX 3.0. It may be run in either 24-bit or 32-bit memory
manager mode. Patriot Command has been tested and verified to
work on the IIcx, IIsi, IIci, LCIII, IIfx, Quadra 700, and Quadra 800.
Sorry, but at this time, Patriot Command will not run on Macs with
the Apple 12 color monitor or the Color Classic. If there is enough
interest, a version for smaller screen color Macs and Powerbooks
with 16 grayscale monitors may be released in the future.
If you like this game, please register your copy by sending in the
registration form (select "Print Registration Form..." from the Apple
menu) along with the $15/copy shareware fee to the below address.
International users (Including Canada), please send in cash since my
bank does not accept foreign checks. Thank you for your support.
Version History
Version 1.1 - Maintenance Release
Fixed the Tokyo city icon to prevent enemy missiles from exploding when
hitting
the Japanese flag
Fixed window update routine so that the appropriate cursor is set when an
update
event occurs
Fixed a problem that caused fatal crashes when running under the 24-bit memory
manager
Fixed a bug that could cause smart bombs to vanish before reaching the ground
Fixed a bug that could cause smart bombs to go off screen
Improved explosion updates to be more uniform when there are many objects on
the
screen
Made some adjustments to the game difficulty to make it slightly harder (many
people thought that 1.0 was too easy even when the difficulty was set to
hard).
I can already guess one future comment: Now it is too hard!!! 8^) Seriously,
though, please let me know what features/modifications youd like to see in
future versions of Patriot Command. I'll do my best to implement as many of
your
suggestions as possible.
Changed the code so that shield and split icons are not displayed in the demo
screen after aborting a game
Fixed a bug that could cause the game to hang if the starting level was
selected
while Game Over was being displayed, immediately followed by pressing the
space
bar
Fixed a bug that would cause portions of destroyed silos to reappear when an
enemy missile or smart bomb hit the destroyed site
Modified the auto-silo select code to select the closest non-empty silo when
the
player uses the mouse button to fire
Added code to accelerate enemy missiles and smart bombs when the player is out
of missiles
Modified city icon selection code to ensure that all city icons are unique at
any given time
Modified the code to prevent shield usage after the Nuke bonus is shot
Added a limit to the number of missiles/bombs that a bomber can drop
Fixed a bug that could cause the game start sound to get mangled

Sample LDEFs with source (for programmers) -
* SICN LDEF - Steve Falkenberg, MacDTS
* Sys7 Icon LDEF, Sys6/7 Icon LDEF, Indenting LDEF - Me
These LDEF's were written as experiments into new formats for
displaying data. I think the Icon LDEF's are useful for use in a
MS Word-like prefs box, and the others have neat uses too.
The commenting is minimal, but so is the functionality in an LDEF.
I think that examination should reveal what you need to know. Use
the LDEF source to write your own, or just use the compiled resources
for your app.
The only thing I could ask is that you post, or at least send me,
any LDEFs you make based on this. I dont need recognition or cash...
cuz I didnt write em for that.
Share and Enjoy...

All,
So To Speak version 1.0 is finally finished! It is the best shareware app
to demonstrate Apple's new Speech Manager. With So To Speak, you can have
two voices speaking at once. While they are speaking, you can vary their
modulation, pitch, rate and volume.
This version works on all Macs, including Macs with small monitors (SE's,
Pluses, etc.) It also works properly on black & white-only machines. You
can also create, open, and save text files. Drag-and-drop of text files is
supported on System 7 machines.
You must have the Speech Manager software to make full use of So To Speak.
Have fun!

Subject: CEToolbox 1.7...
Hi netters!
I am a big fan of this wonderful product called QuicKeys, and I upgraded to
version 3.0. I installed it three weeks ago, and I have some problems since
then. I really think they are related to CEToolbox, version 1.7.
I have a Centris 650 with System 7.1 (with the lateste Update). The problems
are
of the following nature:
- My Mac freezes when it is idle for a long time (it's not SpaceSaver,
AutoDoubler, DiskExpress or anything like that).
- Once in a while, the Finder "restarts" itself as soon as I try to get at one
of its menus.
- Every time I restart my Mac, the startup procedure freezes when it tries to
load CEToolbox. When I restart, StartupManager (part of Now Utilities) tells
me
it deactivated CEToolbox. All I have to do is reactivate it, and it works.
Every
time I restart my Mac, I have to go through the StartupManager in order for it
to work (pretty annoying!).
I am beginning to suspect the CEToolbox 1.7 - NowToolbox 4.0.1p
combination...
Any of you have any insight on this? Or other ideas?
Please respond to the net, or to me directly. I try to read the digest every
day.

I don't know if Disk Express does background defragmentation. However, if
you're interested in acquiring a copy, Alsoft is offering it for $7.95 S & H.
(I'm not endorsing the product; I just believe it's a good deal.) The offer

Some months ago, I posted an article asking advice about an intermittent
wavy line problem on a Laserwriter IIg. I got a couple of replies from
people saying that they'd had the same problem, and had needed the whole
engine replaced.
We've just had the job done - out of guarantee - and the bill was 600
sterling. That's 1000 dollars, guys.
I suspect that this is a design fault in some laserwriter IIgs. Please
could everyone who's had this problem mail me, so that I can see if it's
common enough to take further, and ask for the bill to be waived :-).
The problem is quite characteristic: occasional sheets come out wavy or
jaggy, the problem getting worse from left to right across the page.

I was reminded recently of Jef Raskin, one of the early developers of the
Mac. He later went on to develop the SwyftCard, an absolutely unique (and
wonderful) "minimalist" approach to computing for the Apple II; embodied
it in software as SwyftWare; and then enhanced the idea into a full-blown
box (enhanced minimalist computing?), the Canon Cat. The Cat was
shortlived, being incompatible with other operating systems. But I'm still
intrigued by the approach. I like the idea of having a single Disk command
that either (a) formats the disk and saves the workspace, or (b) loads a
new workspace from a new disk, or (c) copies the contents of the workspace
on disk into the workspace in memory -- depending on context, and never
(in my experience) getting it wrong, and always in less than 10 seconds.
Does anyone know what Jef is up to these days?

Subject: MacTCP and wierd subnet mas
RE:MacTCP and wierd subnet mask
16/11/93 3:39 PM
I have an interesting problem with MacTCP at my site. We have a class B
address
and Macs that use MacIP and server assigned addresses behind Cayman
Gatorboxes.
The setup is pretty garden variety, except for one thing: our subnet mask is
255.255.255.224 (11 bits of subnet, 5 bits of node). The problem first
appeared
when it became apparent that some nodes outside our LAN were unreachable via
IP.
After some midnight packet-watching, and such, I discovered that MacTCP is
*broadcasting* to any address with the last 5 bits set. This is what it
should
do if the rest of the address is identical to its own; but it does it
regardless
of the top 27 bits. The Macs cannot make IP connections to any address that
has
the last 5 bits set. The problem appears in both 1.1.1, and 2.0.2
I have two questions. First of all, has anyone else seen this problem? I
can't
believe I'm the only person with an odd subnet mask.
The second question is a little harder. A workaround that hasn't run into any
problems yet, is to lie to MacTCP about the mask. If I simply tell it that
there is no subnet (that is, 16 bits of node address), I have evidence of
connections within my MacIP subnet, to other local MacIP subnets, and out into
the wide world (even to those nodes that have the last five bits of their IP
addresses set). I believe that the worst problems that this could cause are
that packets bound for IP addresses within a MacIP subnet might go via the
router (instead of by local appletalk), and that IP broadcasts might fail. Is
that correct? Can anyone forsee any other problems?
Thank you,

Subject: Modem question
I just bought the MacWarehouse $99 LineLink (Prometheus) modem. I am very
happy with the increased speed (I had a Zoom 2400) and S/R fax features.
My only problem stems from the slow rate of transfer (I only tried a
download) between home and the Uni's Vax. When I connect to it via a
9600 v32 # I get a transfer rate of 16K/min (I used to get 8K/min). The
Vax transfer protocol is Kermit. I know there are faster protocols but
that's what we have. The MAcKnowledge software that came with the modem
can not do Kermit transfers (or did I miss something???). Besides using my old
software (VTerm Pro) are there any suggestions????
BTW When I used the LL to connect to the Uni's NetMOdem, I get a transfer rate
of 40K/min @ 9600baud so it's not the modem.
One more question, does MacKnowledge auto-configure to the server as long as
you have it on that setting???

I was working in UK tech support while we were evaluating these monitors,
mainly
to fill in while there is such severe constraint on the Apple Color Display.
The other competition was the Sony 1404S and 1430 and a Goldstar.
The Philips was pretty good picturewise, but the box was fairly ugly (one of
them had stereo speakers too).
I have a Sony and it's wonderful (1404S will do 19" mode!) - I think they were
too expensive for Apple though, which is a shame. I seem to remember that the
Pilips was also a multisync, and would do at least a 16" mode. Check this
before
you buy though.

There are commercial utilities to do this, but the best (IMHO) and cheapest
way to achieve this is to simply overwrite all the sectors with something
non-sensitive, and then delete them too. My favourite way is to simply
remove all of your personal stuff, then start duplicating the system folder
over and over again until there is no space left on the disk. Remove all
the copies bar the original, repeat a couple of times, and your nasty
letter about the boss is guaranteed to be buried under a few copies of the
general conrols control panel and its ilk.

I'm having a thorny problem with a new Quadra 605, and am hoping that someone
more knowledgeable than I may prove helpful. The internal drive keeps locking
up soon after certain programs are launched (e.g., the Quark 3.2 updater!) or
when I attempt to copy a large number of files between the internal and
additional external hard drives; sometimes, too, the machine freezes up while
the screen saver is running...I'm not there when that happens, and have no
idea
as to what may be the cause. I have come to _suspect_ that this problem of
mine
has something to do with the speed of the memory upgrade (8MB), which I moved
to the Quadra from an old LCIII. I was given to understand that the memory
add-
on in the LCIII was fast enough, but I begin to wonder if this is really
true.
Realizing, vaguely, that there are dozens of other possible causes -- and I do
run a few extensions, etc. (though none of these is toxic to my DayStar-
accelerated [68040/33MHz] IIci) --, I would like to know if such freezing as
described above is likely to be related to the speed of the memory (which
_may_
be 80ns -- I'll need to check that, if I can make sense of the codes on the
chips -- which I bought from LLB about six months ago). If I am wrong in my
blundering guesswork, any other advice will be warmly welcomed.

I received a healthy number of responses from this posting, and they
continue to trickle in - thank you to all!
Nearly all responses that I've read to date have been in favor of the "LC"
model modem. Aside from the class 1 vs class 2 fax issue (and the
different front panel display) it appears that the "LC" model and its more
expensive relative are virtually identical. A few cautioned me about not
underestimating my future fax needs - that the higher model with class 2
fax ability might be worth the extra cash if I thought my fax traffic was
going to increase significantly over time. But ALL agreed that the "LC"
is well made, reliable, and worth the money.
BTW: Some mentioned cheaper sources for this modem - it always pays to
shop around a bit.
Supra makes a sale. Thanks, everybody.

Me, again...
Thanks to all who responded to my query about random system hangs
on an LC III apparently attributable to the presence of an external
harddrive. I've responded directly to some of you.
Almost everyone suggested a SCSI id conflict and ways to trace/correct
it. I checked that possiblity early on, but 'twasn't the problem. A
few folks suggested my external disk driver might be incompatible.
Mebbe so, though Mr. PowerUser Techsupport says no.
But the problem has, nonetheless, been resolved (I hope).
**knock on silicon**
Though it had been done once before, the appearance of some "corrupted"
icons suggested another desktop rebuild was in order. True to form,
the silly machine hung during the rebuild and, after forcing a quit,
left me with an unbootable internal drive.
**sigh**
Fortunately, reformatting and recovering limited data was not a major
problem, as the LC III has been in service less than 10 days. And
since doing both, both drives have been happy little coexistive campers
and I haven't had a single hang or crash for three days.
**knock, again**
Thanks for the assistance, Info-Mac-ers!

First, I think the moderators deserve a great deal of appreciation for the
endless work they do for "us readers and posters." Thanks, guys.
Second, I'd like to collaborate with others who feel the digest could be
improved by increased moderation. NOTE: I did NOT say _better_ moderation. If
you are interested discussing this, please respond to me directly and I'll
forward your response to all others who are interested. I'd like to find a way
to help Bill and Gordon reduce the irrelevant postings and trim the digest
down to ... a digest.

Try giving the application that is "unexpectedly quitting" more memory.
I've found that this works in most, if not, all cases. Select the
application itself (darken it's icon) and select Get Info from the File
menu.Increase the preferred size to a size that is suitable to your RAM
size (I usually give most application about 1.5 to 2 times its minimum size).

Subject: Using PowerBook 170 with external monitor (R)
The company listed below makes a product called the NoteBook Display
Adaptor. It requires user installation, but when finished it becomes
part of the PowerBook and does not require any other external parts.
A cable is connected to the motherboard, and a standard DB15 female
Macintosh video connector is available on the top left side of the
PowerBook 170. The cable from the monitor plugs into this connector.
I have used this device on my PowerBook 170 for over a year, and it works
fine. I did have a few problems at first, but the compnay took care of
the problems and now it works well.

Subject: WordPerfect for UNIX *now*! Word for UNIX, who knows?
Just in case Erik Schils (digest #224) needs a good word processor
straightaway, he can get WordPerfect running under X-windows. This is
binary compatible with DOS WordPerfect and seems to have the same features
as version 5.1 under DOS i.e. you can create tables easily and import
graphics. However, as it runs under X-windows, the interface is nicely
done.
So is Micromou (as we like to call them in France) going for this
market too? It will be interesting to see. There is certainly some sense
in everyone on a heterogenous network being able to share word processor
files irrespective of whether they are on a DOS, Mac or a UNIX box.
WordPerfect seem to be well on the road to achieving this (ah! but is
version 3.0 for the Mac binary compatible with the ODS and UNIX versions
....), can Uncle Bill catch them and overtake them?
